Culture Trivia

Hairy Musicals and Films:

  • Hair, an iconic 1960’s rock musical (and film) with lyrics by James Rado and Gerome Ragni, and music by Galt MacDermot. A product of the hippie counter-culture and sexual revolution of the 1960s, several of its songs became anthems of the anti-Vietnam War peace movement. Hair had a tremendous cultural effect and long lasting legacy.
  • Hairspray, is a musical with music by Marc Shaiman, lyrics by Scott Wittman and Shaiman and a book by Mark O'Donnell and Thomas Meehan. It is based on the 1988 John Waters film Hairspray. The songs include 1960s-style dance music and "downtown" rhythm and blues. It had plenty of adaptations and won many awards. In tells the story of a 1962 Baltimore, Maryland, plump teenager Tracy Turnblad who’s dream is to dance on The Corny Collins Show, a local TV dance program based on the real-life Buddy Deane Show. When Tracy wins a role on the show, she becomes a celebrity overnight. She then launches a campaign to integrate the show. Hairspray is a social commentary on the injustices of parts of American society in the 1960s.
  • Good Hair, is a 2009 American comedy documentary film produced by Chris Rock and HBO Films, starring and narrated by comedian Chris Rock. The film focuses on African American women's hair, including the styling industry surrounding it, the acceptable look of African American women's hair in society, and the effects of both upon African American culture. It is both hilariously funny and educational.
  • Edward Scissorhands, is a 1990 romantic fantasy film directed by Tim Burton and starring Johnny Depp. The film shows the story of an artificial man named Edward, an unfinished creation, who has scissors for hands. Edward is taken in by a suburban family and falls in love with their teenage daughter Kim. The main themes of Edward Scissorhands deal with self-discovery and isolation and acceptance.
  • The Hairdresser's Husband, a 1990 French film written by Patrice Leconte and Claude Klotz, and directed by Leconte. Jean Rochefort stars as the title character. Anna Galiena co-stars. It is the story of Antoine, fulfilling his childhood ambition: to marry a haidresser.
  • You Don’t Mess with the Zohan, is a 2008 American comedy film directed by Dennis Dugan, written by Carlito Cabardo, and produced by and starring Adam Sandler. The film is about Zohan Dvir, an Israeli counter-terrorist army commando who fakes his own death in order to pursue his dream of becoming a hairstylist in New York City.
  • Tangled, is a 2010 American computer animated film produced by Walt Disney. The film features the voices of Mandy Moore, Zachary Levi and Donna Murphy and is loosely based on the German fairy tale “Rapunzel” by the Brothers Grimm.

Fun facts:

  • Rapunzel has 70 feet of golden hair and more than 100,000 individual strands
  • The Wizard of Oz: Dorothy's hair changes lengths throughout the course of the film, most noticeably in the Scarecrow cornfield sequence. This was the first sequence to be shot. As production progressed, refinements were made to Judy Garland's hair and make-up. At the end of filming, reshoots were done of the cornfield sequence and, thus, the shots do not match.
